Cancellation of provisional registration or suspend the conditions attached to the registration
The SMC may consider cancelling the doctor’s provisional registration or suspend the conditions attached to the doctor’s registration if the doctor:
has breached the conditions of his medical registration; or
has ceased practice at the approved place of supervision; or
does not have consistently satisfactory performance in his/her PGY1 assessments or has not performed to the standards that SMC requires; or
has ceased practice without prior approval from SMC including taking No-Pay leave without SMC’s approval.
The doctor’s practising certificate will be deemed cancelled in the event that his/her registration has been cancelled or the conditions attached to his/her registration has been suspended by the SMC.
No-Pay Leave application
The provisionally registered doctor is considered to have failed to comply with the conditions specified in the grant of his/her medical registration, and his/her provisional registration will be cancelled or the conditions attached to his/her registration will be suspended if he/she goes on No-Pay Leave (NPL) without SMC’s approval.
The employing institution must submit an online application for the doctor should he/she wish to go on NPL. All reasons for the application will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
The online application should be submitted to Council at least 4 weeks before the doctor embarks on / continues with his/her NPL. The outcome will be made known to the employer 2 weeks after the receipt of the application.
The doctor may be required to apply to vary the provisional registration condition for a longer duration to make up the shortfall in the PGY1 training period (in the event that he/she is granted NPL).
The doctor’s medical registration will be cancelled or the conditions attached to his/her registration will be suspended if the request is not approved by Council and he/she still proceeds with his/her NPL. He/She has to apply to the SMC for approval if he/she wishes to return to practise.
