Guidelines on Aesthetic Practices for Doctors

The Guidelines on Aesthetic Practices for Doctors (2016 Edition) (“Guidelines”) supercedes the guidelines issued in 2008.

Doctors who are currently carrying out aesthetic procedures or who intend to do so are advised to refer to the Guidelines for the approved procedures under Table 1 or Table 2:

• Table 1 - lists the approved aesthetic procedures which non-specialists and other specialists not listed under Table 2 can perform if they have met the requisite number of procedures performed from 1 October 2006 to 30 September 2008 ("the Relevant Period"). If a doctor has not performed the requisite number of procedures in the Relevant Period, he/she will have to obtain a Certificate of Competence (COC).

• Table 2 - lists the approved aesthetic treatments and procedures which certain specialists such as Dermatologists, Plastic Surgeons, Ophthalmologists (who are trained in Oculoplasty), Otorhinolaryngologists (ENT surgeons with facial plastic training) and General Surgeons (who are trained in vascular surgery and in procedures such as phlebectomy and sclerotherapy) can perform.

Please note that the SMC reserves the right to amend the above criteria for COC course accreditation and update the list of COC courses.

Please also note that attendance for a COC course does not automatically absolve a doctor of any responsibility in the event of a complaint or disciplinary inquiry as each complaint or disciplinary inquiry will be dealt with on a case by case basis.
